Sinusitis
Sinusitis
Description:
Sinusitis, often referred to as a sinus infection, is a common medical condition characterized by the inflammation and swelling of the sinus cavities. These are the air-filled spaces located within the bones of the face and around the nasal passages. Sinusitis can be acute (short-term) or chronic (lasting for an extended period).
Common symptoms of sinusitis include nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, a headache, a stuffy or runny nose, and a reduced sense of smell. In some cases, fever, fatigue, and cough may also be present.
Acute sinusitis is usually caused by a viral infection, such as a cold, and typically resolves on its own. However, chronic sinusitis may result from recurring infections, allergies, or structural issues in the nasal passages. Treatment options may include nasal decongestants, saline nasal sprays, antibiotics (for bacterial infections), or surgery in severe cases.
Management of chronic sinusitis often involves addressing underlying causes, such as allergies or structural abnormalities, and may require long-term medical intervention. Proper diagnosis and management by a healthcare provider can help alleviate symptoms and improve the quality of life for individuals with sinusitis.
