Jaundice

Description:
Jaundice, also known as icterus, is a medical condition characterized by the yellowing of the skin, mucous membranes, and the whites of the eyes. It occurs when there is an excess of bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced during the breakdown of red blood cells, in the bloodstream. Bilirubin buildup can result from various underlying causes, including:
  1. Liver Disorders: Conditions like hepatitis, cirrhosis, or alcoholic liver disease can impair the liver's ability to process bilirubin.
  2. Hemolytic Anemia: This condition involves the rapid breakdown of red blood cells, leading to an increased production of bilirubin.
  3. Biliary Obstruction: Blockages in the bile ducts, often caused by gallstones or tumors, can prevent bilirubin from being excreted properly.
  4. Newborn Jaundice: Common in newborns, this type of jaundice results from an immature liver and typically resolves on its own.
Treatment for jaundice depends on the underlying cause. It may involve managing the primary condition, such as treating hepatitis or removing gallstones. In severe cases, therapies like phototherapy or exchange transfusions may be used to lower bilirubin levels. Prompt medical evaluation is essential, as untreated jaundice can lead to serious complications.
